Year Three

Year 3 Create Explosive Kenning Poems Inspired by Volcanoes

In the autumn term, our Year 3 children have been learning about the fascinating world of volcanoes as part of their geography curriculum. To deepen their understanding and unleash their creativity, they explored the ancient art of kenning poetry.

Kennings are short, descriptive phrases or compound words that hint at the subject without directly naming it. After studying examples and discussing how kennings use imagination and metaphor, the children wrote their own powerful poems inspired by the fiery force of volcanoes.

Through their poems, the children transformed what they had learned about volcanoes into vivid and evocative language, creating lines like lava-spitter, earth-shaker, and fire-breather. Their writing beautifully captured the awe and drama of these natural wonders while showcasing their expanding vocabulary and poetic skills.
