Power Maths at Malvern Primary School
At Malvern Primary School, we are proud to use Power Maths as our whole-class mastery programme for maths lessons from Reception to Year 6. T
Power Maths is fully aligned with the White Rose Maths progressions and schemes of learning and follows guidance from the Department for Education (DfE) and the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM). Written by mastery experts and inspired by global best practices, Power Maths is specifically designed for UK classrooms, ensuring it meets the unique needs of our pupils.
A Mastery Approach
Power Maths is built on a growth mindset and problem-solving philosophy that fosters confidence, resilience and curiosity. Its lesson sequence is carefully designed to support the NCETM’s definition of mastery, helping children deepen their understanding of core concepts and build their mathematical confidence. Each lesson is divided into evidence-based sections, guiding children through:
- Discovery – A hands-on activity sparks curiosity and encourages questioning.
- Sharing – Children share their ideas, reason together and learn from misconceptions through class discussions.
- Scaffolded Practice – Carefully structured tasks help develop understanding, with scaffolding gradually reduced to prepare children for independent work.
- Independent Practice – Pupils apply their learning in practice books, tackling problems that gradually increase in complexity.
- Reflection – Opportunities to reflect on their learning ensure children consolidate their understanding.
Key Features of Power Maths Lessons
Every Power Maths lesson begins with a Power Up! activity, designed to build fluency in key number facts and set the tone for exciting learning ahead. Hands-on problems spark curiosity and deeper questioning, while whole-class discussions help uncover misconceptions and refine understanding. Pupils work with partners, in groups and independently, ensuring that all learners are actively engaged at every stage.
At Malvern Primary School, Power Maths is more than a programme; it’s a pathway to fostering a lifelong love of maths and ensuring every pupil achieves their potential.
