PHSE Workshop- Our Approach to RSE-

At Malvern, we believe that a collaborative approach with parents is key to delivering an impactful and supportive curriculum. Our Jigsaw program is designed to equip children and young people with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the complexities of the real world. This parent workshop aimed to provide parents with a clear understanding of the curriculum and how it benefits their children.

Through RSHE, we aim to prepare pupils for the natural changes they will experience, encourage them to build healthy attitudes and foster their understanding of positive relationships. By working together, we can ensure that all children grow with confidence, supported by both the school and home.

We encourage parents to join this workshop to gain insight into the curriculum and develop an understanding of how they can support your child’s development during these critical stages of their life. Together, we can create a strong foundation for their future well-being and success.

Was Rome Really Built in a Day? – A Celebration of Roman Culture

During our first showcase of the academic year, year four pupils invited families to explore the beauty and precision of Roman mosaic art, as pupils exhibited stunning mosaic pieces inspired by Roman architecture.

Our young artists created borders using repeating patterns around a vibrant central motif. During the afternoon, Pupils also tested families’ historical knowledge and proudly presented beautifully written descriptions of an Iceni house—a testament to their growing appreciation of ancient history and its lasting influence on art and design.

It was a fantastic day celebrating creativity, history and the talents of our pupils! Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our budding historians and artists

Does all ‘good’ art need to look ‘realistic?- Who was Wassily Kandinsky?

During our Y2 showcase, pupils invited families to step into the world of abstract art and explore the vibrant, expressive creations inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Our curation included unique artworks filled with bold shapes, vivid colours and dynamic patterns, capturing the imagination and spirit of Kandinsky’s style.

Each young artist created a piece that reflected their interpretation of Kandinsky’s abstract vision, combining swirling shapes with striking colour contrasts. The event also included a special recitation of The Owl and the Pussycat by Edward Lear, where pupils confidently shared the poem from memory, adding their own expression to every line. It was a joy to behold the blend of artistic and literary talents on display and to see pupils sharing their outstanding written work with families with such confidence.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating our pupils’ creativity.

Read, Write, Inc.- Reading fluently in Key Stage One!

In  this informative reading workshop, teachers guided parents on effective strategies to support their children in learning to read. The session focused on developing key skills, including quickly and effortlessly decoding letter-sound correspondences using phonics, recognising common exception words on sight and reading aloud with fluency and expression.

Parents also developed skills to help their children spell by segmenting sounds in words, ensuring a strong foundation in literacy. This workshop provided practical tips and techniques, empowering parents to confidently support their child’s reading journey at home.

Read, Write, Inc.- Get Reading in Reception!

Reception parents attended our annual Read Write Inc workshop. At this session, teachers demonstrated to parents how to support young children in developing early reading skills. The session focused on introducing single letter sounds and helping children recognise and pronounce them confidently.

Parents also developed a range of techniques for guiding their children in orally blending these sounds to form simple words, a key step in building reading fluency. This hands on workshop provided practical strategies and resources, empowering parents to nurture their child’s reading development effectively at home.

Healthy Soup Making in EYFS

Pupils in reception enjoyed the opportunity to visit a local supermarket and purchase the ingredients to prepare a tasty and healthy soup. After their visit, reception children were excited to welcome their families into school to prepare a delicious meal alongside their grown-ups! Children  thoroughly enjoyed chopping and slicing  vegetables and ensuring that good hygiene was maintained.  When the  children got back to class, they were keen to write about what they had done.

Reading For Pleasure- Family Workshops

During the autumn term of 2024, our brand-new school library (situated on the court yard) was the venue for a series of reading for pleasure workshops for parents hosted by our Reading Advocate, Mr Kynaston.   The workshops focused on the importance of reading aloud and the multiple benefits of reading for pleasure.  Towards the end of each session, children joined parents for a browse and a read in the comfort of our new library.

During the workshops, families explored the significant  research that points to the importance and advantages of children reading for pleasure.  These advantages can be summed up as follows:

  • The positive relationship between reading frequency, reading enjoyment and attainment.
  • Reading enjoyment has been reported as more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status.
  • The strong link between positive attitudes towards reading and scoring well on reading assessments.
  • Regularly reading stories or novels outside of school is associated with higher scores in reading assessments.
  • Reading for pleasure is an activity that has emotional and social consequences.
  • Other benefits to reading for pleasure include: text comprehension and grammar, positive reading attitudes, pleasure in reading in later life, increased general knowledge.
