At Malvern, our Art and Design curriculum is underpinned by a detailed knowledge of the visual and tactile elements of the subject. Our systematic and progressive approach allows learners to refine their skills year on year, develop a rich understanding of diverse artistic styles and gain mastery over the visual and tactile elements. This equips pupils to make informed aesthetic choices about their own and others’ artwork.
Alongside practical and theoretical knowledge, we place a strong emphasis on nurturing disciplinary knowledge. Disciplinary knowledge helps pupils understand how art is studied, critiqued and valued. It complements practical skills such as drawing, painting and sculpting, and theoretical knowledge, such as understanding artistic movements or the use of elements like line and texture.
Ofsted’s Research Review Series: Art and Design highlights the importance of integrating these forms of knowledge to provide pupils with a comprehensive education in art. For instance, through critical evaluation and reflection, pupils learn to engage thoughtfully with their own work and that of others, deepening their appreciation of art as both a discipline and a form of expression.
