The Summer Reading Challenge
This is the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4 to 11. This year, the challenge is called ‘Marvellous Makers’ and runs from Saturday 6th July – Saturday 7th September. Children can sign up any time between these dates.
How the Challenge Works
Children sign up at their local library and borrow and read 6 library books (or more if they wish) of their choice. On completion, they are presented with a certificate and a medal.
The Summer Reading Challenge combines FREE access to books with creative activities during the summer holidays. Throughout the Challenge, library staff support the children, helping them to discover new authors and illustrators and to explore a wide range of books and ways of reading.
What are the Benefits ?
The Summer Reading Challenge can:
- Help to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’ for pupils
- Ensure your pupils are ready for their return to school in the autumn
- Support the transition between year groups and key stages
