Year 6 Bring Stories to Life with Narrative Poetry
Year 6 children delved into the world of narrative poetry, where storytelling meets the beauty of verse. As part of their learning, they read and analysed two classic narrative poems: The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes and The Spider and The Fly by Mary Howitt. These works inspired the children to explore how poets use rhythm, imagery and structure to tell compelling stories.
Building on these ideas, the children were challenged to transform a traditional children’s tale into their own narrative poem. From Little Red Riding Hood to Jack and the Beanstalk, they reimagined familiar stories with vivid descriptions, dramatic dialogue and creative twists.
The children embraced the challenge of weaving rhythm and rhyme into their storytelling, demonstrating their creativity and deep understanding of this poetic form.
