Romeo and Juliet

‘For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo’

On the evening of Thursday 19th September, Drama & Theatre Club children gathered at Shakespeare North Playhouse for their first theatrical outing of the 2024-2025 school year.  The spectacle to behold was The Bard of Avon’s timeless tale of the Montagues and the Capulets: Romeo and Juliet.

The amazing retelling of Shakespeare’s eternal love story seamlessly wove British Sign Language, captions and audio description into the storytelling.  The show was performed by an incredible ensemble of deaf, disabled and neurodivergent actors.  The performance was a collaboration between Shakespeare North Playhouse, Graeae and Theatre by the Lake.

During the interval, an audience member (who is also a theatre volunteer) approached Malvern staff and said: ‘As soon as the show started, I knew from the children’s engagement and exemplary behaviour that they just had to be Malvern pupils.’

We were delighted to be joined by several colleagues from Liverpool Hope University’s School of Education. At the end of the show, the cast returned to the auditorium to meet the children – and complimented them on their dancing during the party scene.
