We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.

The Magic of Poetry
Poetry is an essential and enchanting part of our English curriculum at Malvern Primary. By immersing pupils in a wide variety of poetic styles—from rhyme to free verse, haikus to limericks—we unlock a love for language that goes beyond the written word. Poetry encourages self-expression, creativity and a deeper understanding of language’s rhythmic beauty, fostering an appreciation that grows as our pupils do.
Research underscores the value of exposing children to poetry early in their education. Studies have shown that rhyme and rhythm support phonological awareness, which is key to language development and literacy. As the National Literacy Trust highlights, “the sounds, patterns and playfulness in poetry make it an ideal medium for helping children develop vocabulary, comprehension and a love for reading.” By exploring a range of poetic forms, pupils at Malvern are given the freedom to find their unique preferences, allowing them to experience the joy of discovering language that resonates with them personally.
Whenever possible, we also arrange for poets to visit our school so pupils can enjoy poetry first-hand. Meeting a poet in person adds an inspiring, memorable element to their learning as they see how language can be brought to life by those who create it. These visits bring joy and enthusiasm, leaving lasting impressions on our pupils as they explore the craft of poetry directly with the experts.
Additionally, we recognise the power of hearing poetry as it was meant to be experienced. Listening to poems read aloud adds another layer of magic and understanding, which is why we make use of CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) poetry videos in our classrooms. These recordings bring the words to life, capturing the rhythm, tone and emotion intended by the poets themselves. For parents and students interested in enjoying these videos at home, please visit: CLPE Poetry Videos.
By embedding poetry into our curriculum and providing opportunities to engage with poets personally, we nurture confident, imaginative communicators who appreciate the beauty of language and carry this with them throughout their lives.
